Born on a Mohegan settlement in southeastern Connecticut, Occom’s mother was a direct descendant of the Mohegan leader, Uncas. Samson Occom (Occum) Born in a wigwam on Mohegan land, Samson Occom () was one of the first ordained Christian Indian ministers. Occom's popularity as an eloquent teacher and spiritual leader grew with Indians over a large part of New England.

To accommodate this interest, he decided to form a New England Christian Indian School. Samson Occum was a well-respected minister in the late 18 th century who worked tirelessly towards peace in his community. Believed to be the descendant of a Mohegan chief, 1 he was credited as one of the first ordained Christian Indian ministers.
